This is a quick tour of a computer platform which should ensure that
you can utilize some important information technology (IT) which will
be needed for subsequent labs.
Goals:
- an introduction to a computer platform, such as ...
- Windows
- Macintosh
- Linux (if you dare)
- a chance to try various computer components ...
- input
- output
- local hard disk
- local floppy disk
- remote server disk
- printer
- some experience with some popular applications
- word processor
- graphics
- spreadsheet (maybe)
- browser
- email
Exercises:
- Compose a one-page resume and one-page cover letter, addressed
to J.D., applying for your dream summer job (please feel invited to be serious or creative).
- Using a graphics/painting application, either draw a rough
signature or draw your own personal letterhead to be included into
the cover letter. You may generate a graphic from a
spreadsheet/charting application if you would like. You may also
use your browser to find a simple, small, interesting graphic and
legally download it, and place that into your cover
letter. Please obey any copyright restrictions encountered on
the web (ask if you are not sure).
- Import your drawing from above into the cover letter, and save
this document locally (either hard disk or floppy) in Rich-Text Format as
yourlastname.cover.rtf. Save the resume as
yourlastname.resume.rtf. [note: some applications (like TextEdit on Mac) use ".rtfd"
(Rich Text Format Directory), try to avoid a directory]
- Now save these documents as text files using the "Save as
..." file option. Please use the above naming convention
appended with "
.txt", replacing ".rtf".
- You should now have four files. Look on the computer you are
using and try to open each file with three applications. Note any unusual or
impossible situations that arise.
- The size of this folder should be no more than 180 KB (actually, closer to 100-120 KB would be great). If you find you exceed this limit, please find a smaller graphic or visit one of the professors and/or TAs/lab monitors.
Submission of Lab Work: Please follow all instructions completely to help with management of the lab evaluation
- send an email with the subject line
"cs100 lab0 sp08" and with the text-only (.txt) files attached
- attach the cover letter text file and the resume text file (i.e., not the .rtf files !)
- briefly discuss the three applications used to inspect the
.rtf files in the body of the email message
- send the email message to Joe Huttner (jhuttner@haverford.edu) for
cs100
- be sure the subject line is correct, containing only the 15 characters inside the quotes:
"cs100 lab0 sp08"
- Submit the rich-text format (rtf) version of your resume and your cover letter
via Blackboard
(Hint: Need to
Add and Send)
